Last night we did our part and said goodbye to one of our favorite local places to camp, Kickapoo State Park. As some of you might know, our state's governer is closing two dozen state parks and historical sites to try to balance our state's budget. It is such a sad thing and while we've had the chance to enjoy several of the sites on the cut list, it is sad to know that we won't have another chance to go back.
But we didn't let that get us down and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! We enjoyed the clear weather and all of the stars and Aedan was thrilled to see a number of deer roaming through our campground. Best of all we all got to bed early! Aedan cheered us up in the cold morning by complimenting Neal (in grubby clothes, scruffy face, bed hair, still trying to wake up, etc) by saying, "You look handsome daddy!"
(Do you love my Sally Tattoo Bandaid?) We were able to wrap up pretty quick in the morning to make it to our nephew G's soccer game (today) which is also on his birthday and we were glad to see him and his team play so well - let's face it, they don't keep score but we all knew that they won... Aedan enjoyed watching the older kids and kept trying to run out in the field and join them. We had fun cheering G on and watching him when he didn't know we were watching. My favorites were his imaginary saves as he was positioned as goalie during a particularly boring part of the game for him! He is an awesome kid and we are excited to see him again tomorrow! Happy Birthday cousin/nephew G!
Roman calls them Smarshmallows too!!! I love it. Mmmmm smores (drool) I've been eating smores like crazy, but there just not the same in the microwave :)
ReplyDeleteBoy that looks fun! I want to try the smores with peanut butter cups--yum.
ReplyDeletehow fun! chris and i are gathering some camping stuff together so we can explore this new land.
ReplyDeleteLooks like fun. Crazy that they're shutting down so many places. :(
ReplyDeleteGreat s'mores tips--I can't wait to try the peanut butter cups!
Mmmm. That s'more looks so yummy! I'm a big fan, so I'll have to try those new recipes. Good for you guys for getting out and going camping!
ReplyDeleteThe camping looks great, but boo hoo, I'm so sad about Kickapoo! I didn't know they were closing it down... We have some good memories there--many of which involve marshmallows too. While we didn't bring any camping gear overseas, much to my daughters' delight, marshmallows are still easily obtained.
ReplyDeleteI don't even know where to begin I have so much to comment on :) First off- I LOVE the new layout! You are the queen of design. Secondly- I'm really sad that they are closing some parks in Illinois. I didn't take advantage of them, but it was just nice to know that they were there. Also, seeing you guys camping reminded me that we were never able to do our big dutch oven cookout :( Oh well luckily we are basically related so I know we can have it sometime. One last thing- I TOO LOVE smores!!! I especially love toasted marshmallows. I prefer it when the marshmallow catches on fire so it is chared all around. I call them fiery balls of goodness. YUMMMMM! I had never thought of trying smores with different ingredients, you should suggest that as the next daring bakers challenge :)
